It’s a top-down, tile-based RPG, with a variety of races and classes to master, and a mean streak wider than Rushmore Jefferson’s nostrils. You won’t have to squint at ASCII ... The loot is vastly simplified compared to Maj'Eyal, but just about any roguelike is going to have simpler itemization than Maj'Eyal. ToME is probably my favorite overall game, roguelike or not. I have just over 1000 hours through the Steam version and at least a couple hundred more outside of Steam. I have been playing the game on and off for years and somehow I keep coming back. My only real complaint is that a single run just takes so much time.

Combat is far more engaging than in any other roguelike. The classes are more interesting as well. Yeah, it trades world variety for class variety.
